Panch Kedar Yatra is an extraordinary pilgrimage that takes devotees on a transformative journey to five holy temples of Lord Shiva in the majestic Uttarakhand Himalayas. This sacred circuit tour, encompassing Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar, holds immense spiritual significance and dates back to ancient times when the Pandavas established these revered abodes in the Garhwal region. Embarking on the Panch Kedar Yatra is not merely a trek but an opportunity to seek divine blessings while being immersed in the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayan landscape.

Significance of Panch Kedar

In the war of Mahabharat, the Pandavas had to slay their evil cousins, the Kauravas, as well as their relatives and Brahmin Gurus who were all on the side of the Kauravas. After the war, the Pandavas shared their wish, to atone for their sins of committing fratricide and killing Brahmins, with Lord Krishna.

Lord Krishna advised them that they could only seek atonement for their sins with the blessings of Lord Shiva. However, Shiva was exceedingly angry with the Pandavas for their deeds in the war and didn't want to grant them his "Divine Darshan."

On their quest to find Lord Shiva, Pandavas wandered in the Himalayas for years and finally reached kedarnath, where Lord Shiva had disguised himself as a bull and mingled with a herd. The bull appeared different, and when Bheem tried to catch it, it started vanishing into the ground and later emerged in five parts at five different places in the Himalayas. The hump appeared in Kedarnath, the naval appeared at Madhyamaheshwer, the chest and arms appeared in Tungnath, the face appeared in Rudranath, and the matted hair of Lord Shiva appeared in Kalpeshwar.

The Pandavas constructed five temples at each of these places to appease Lord Shiva and seek atonement for their sins. Lord Shiva became immensely pleased with their devotion and blessed them. These holy shrines of Lord Shiva later became revered as Panch Kedar, and whoever completes this sacred journey of Panch Kedar rids themselves of their sins and attains salvation.
